On April 24, Armenians throughout the world, including hundreds of thousands of EU citizens of Armenian descent, commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide committed in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. In the Commission’s statement of 9 December 2020 on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide, the Commission stressed that ‘We must never forget the atrocities of the past. We owe it to the victims of these crimes against humanity. We also owe it to ourselves: we can only build a better future if we acknowledge the dark days of the past. It is a moral obligation towards humanity’.

What is the Commission doing to ensure that the victims and wounds of the Armenian Genocide are not forgotten, and that this particular atrocity from the past is acknowledged and recognised?
