EP Plenary intervention on the death of Mahsa Amini and the repression of women’s rights protesters in Iran: Call on HR/VP Borrell to designate IRGC a Terrorist Organisation.

In light of the shocking death of Mahsa Amini and the brutal crackdown by the Iranian regime on the subsequent protests, TFI President and MEP, Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou, called on HR/VP Borrell to take immediate steps in designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a « terrorist organization. »
“The EU’s response is currently exhausted with statements and debates, instead of action.”
MEP Asimakopoulou highlighted that whilst shocking, the death of Mahsa Amini is not surprising to Iranian citizens who see their most basic human rights routinely trampled on. In response to the current situation, Iran has accused the US of instigating the protests, while the IRGC is engaged in reprisal raids against protestors and their supporters.
MEP Asimakopoulou noted the broader backdrop that the protests are set against, detailing Iran’s threats to “wipe Israel off the map”, its nuclear weapons programme, and the state sponsored terrorist activities of the IRGC.
“It is terrifying that all this rhetoric comes from a country building nuclear weapons.”

MEP Asimakopoulou was speaking during Tuesday’s European Parliament Plenary Session on the agenda item “The death of Mahsa Amini and the repression of women’s rights protesters in Iran”.
